How to Make a Towel Cake

Towel cakes have become a popular industry. People give them as presents for all types of celebrations, including weddings, birthdays and housewarming parties. You can make them in a wide variety of colour schemes with any brand of towel. For an even more unique cake, purchase towels off the recipient’s registry.

To make your own wedding towel cake, gather the following supplies:

- 4 Bath Towels
- 4 Hand Towels
- 4 Wash Cloths
- Cake Topper
- Safety Pins
- Assorted Ribbons and Elastic
- Silk Flowers
- String of Small Pearls
- Novelty Wedding Bands
- Spools of ribbon
- Very large rubber bands
- Pizza pan
- White spray paint
- Wooden dowel

Before beginning, spray the pizza pan with white paint and let dry overnight. You can also substitute the pizza pan with a simple plastic circular platter.

Step 1: Layer One

a. Spread out the first two bath towels in front of you, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 2-3 inches.
b. Safety pin the towels together to make one long towel.
c. Add the second set of towels over the top, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 2-3 inches.
d. Safety pin the second layer of towels together to make one long towel.
e. Create a tight coil by rolling the two layers of towels together. Use rubber bands to secure, and safety pin the towels together at each end.

Step 2: Layer Two

a. Spread out the first two hand towels in front of you, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 1-2 inches.b. Safety pin the two hand towels together to make one long towel.c. Add the second set of hand towels over the top, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 1-2 inches.d. Safety pin the two hand towels together to make one long towel.e. Step 3: Layer Three

a. Spread out the first two wash cloths in front of you, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 1-2 inches.

b. Safety pin the wash cloths together to make one long wash cloth.

c. Add the second set of wash cloths over the top, folded in thirds, with the ends overlapping 1-2 inches.

d. Create a coil by rolling the two layers of wash cloths together. Use rubber bands to secure, and safety pin the wash cloths together at each end.

Step 4: Setting Up the Cake

a. Stack the layers on the white pizza pan, with the largest layer at the bottom and smallest layer at the top. Secure with safety pins.

b. Put the wooden dowel through the centre to stabilize the cake. Cut the dowel 1-2 inches below the top of the cake so it doesn’t stick out.

Step 5: The Decorations

a. Place the cake topper at the top of the cake.

b. Arrange flowers between each layer and spread a few flowers over the top.

c. Decorate cake with ribbons to hide the rubber bands.

d. Drape the pearls over the cake layer by layer.

e. Add the wedding rings.

Towels have been a part of society since the 14^th century, when people in the city of Bursa (now Turkey) wove them in intricate patterns. You may think you know everything there is to know about towels. However, you may not have heard these towel stories. Here are some entertaining facts about towels you can use at your next social gathering.

1. Towel Day

On 25 May each year, fans of Douglas Adams’ celebrate Towel Day. Adams is the author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a humorous science-fiction novel in which the following section appears:

“…a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (non-hitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit, etc. etc. …What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against the odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”

Fans of the book carry a towel on 25 May as a tribute to the author. The tradition began back in 2001, just after Adams’ death.

2. Taking Towels

There is a long-standing joke that people steal towels from hotels while on holiday. What is not so funny is this…There is now a technology that allow hotels to track down missing items. A company based in Miami is marketing a washable tag to sew into hotel items such as sheets, bathrobes and towels so they can be located later on.

According to listverse.com, a resort in Honolulu, Hawaii has reported the reduction in pool towel thefts by 3,250 towels a month since they implemented the system. The tracking company is currently working on a system for use in Australia.

Major League Baseball legend Yogi Berra shared a funny joke about hotel towels. After speaking as a guest of honour at a hotel reception, the Hall of Famer spoke to reporters. When asked about his accommodations, Berra said, “The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase.”

The RIGHT Way to Fold Sheets

Learning how to fold sheets is a great skill for everyone. It will keep your linen closet organised and your bed wrinkle free. This post will teach you all you need to know to fold fitted and flat sheets like an expert. But don’t tell your friends and family—or you may find yourself folding more sheets than you bargained for!

Fitted Sheets

Fitted sheets are tricky to fold, which is why so many people have them bunched up on their closet shelves. Even the most patient person can become frustrated and give up. Fortunately, it is easy to learn how to fold fitted sheets so that they look neat and store easily. All you need to get started is a clean, warm sheet fresh out of the dryer, which will eliminate wrinkles. Then follow the steps below.

1. Spread the sheet out on top of the bed with the top side facing down. The two long sides should be at the top and bottom and the short sides should be on each end.

2. Grab the bottom left and right corners in each corresponding hand. Bring the bottom of the sheet up to the top, folding it in half. The bottom corners should meet the top corners.

3. Carefully tuck each corner into the sheet’s elastic so that the corner is right side (or top side) out.

4. Bring the top right and bottom right corners over to the left side, folding it in half again.

5. Carefully tuck the elastic so that the corners are right side up.

6. Now that you have a rectangle, fold the sheet in half from bottom to top, and again from left to right.

That’s all there is to it! Not only will your sheets stack nicely in your closet, you will also have a wrinkle-free sheet when it is time to make your bed.

Flat Sheets

Flat sheets are much easier to fold. However, you still need to be diligent if you want them folded neatly. First, shake out a warm sheet.

1. Grab the sheet by two corners on one of the shorter sides.

2. Hold up the sheet in front of you so that it hangs lengthwise, with the bottom side of the sheet facing you.

3. Move your hands down the length of sheet so that the top edge falls toward you. Continue until the top edge of the sheet meets the bottom edge. The bottom side of the sheet will now be on the inside.

4. Fold the sheet in half using the same process as in step 3, letting the top edge fall forward until it meets the bottom edge.

5. Repeat again, so that there is a total of three half-folds in the shape of a rectangle.

6. Fold the rectangle in half from left to right.

7. Repeat twice to form a small rectangle.

Then smooth the sheet with your hands and you are good to go. It is all ready to be stored in the linen closet!

The most common towel idiom in the English language is ‘Throw in the towel.’ Although people now use the expression to mean giving something up, the phrase was originally a boxing term from the early 20^th century which meant an acknowledgement of defeat. When a boxer was losing a fight and wanted to stop the beating, he would actually throw a towel in the ring to indicate he was conceding the fight. Before people threw in the towel in boxing, they threw in the sponge, a common accessory found ringside as far back as the 1700s.

I Asked for a Wet Wipe but This Is Ridiculous

The Daily Mail reported a story about a child’s experience at KFC which left him with a hand towel for dinner. When Krystal Henderson served her stepson a boneless chicken meal, she was quite surprised to find a breaded blue hand towel inside. The incredulous stepmom told the Daily Mail, “When he bit into it, it was rock hard. He pulled it out of his mouth and when he did, it pulled away the batter—you could see the blue roll inside.” Concerned that the towel could contain bleach or disinfectant, Henderson felt terrible. She received an apology and her stepson got a free meal.

Walmart’s Black Friday Bestseller Cost 29 Cents

According to TIME, the biggest bestseller for Walmart during Black Friday 2013 was something unusual—towels. Walmart sold 2.8 million bath towels and washcloths for $1.74 and 29 cents respectively. Stores opened at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, helping the discount superstore to sell 1 million more towels than the previous Black Friday. The article quoted a Walmart spokesperson telling NBC News, “We’ve seen at-home items like towels and sheets and even Rubbermaid Tupperware become popular on Black Friday at our stores. A lot of people are either hosting guests for the weekend or preparing for guests for the holiday season.”

How Clean Is Your Bath Towel?

We count on our bath towels being clean and smelling nice. It can be quite disappointing to dry off with a towel that looks dirty or has a bad odour. But we shouldn't be surprised when it happens because many of us are making crucial mistakes.

Towels Get Dirty

Human beings lose between 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every hour. When people towel off after a shower, many of those dead skin cells are left behind, particularly if the towel is damp. Bacteria love a wet environment and will grow on your towel is it isn't dried properly. The next time you use your towel you may be putting the bacteria on your own body.

Some people are so bothered by the possibility of a bacteria-laden towel that they use a new one every time. But most dermatologists recommend changing towels once a week. However, if someone in the household is sick it is better to change towels every two to three days. That is because viruses can spread easily between towels. Of course, you should never share a towel with someone else because of the risk of spreading infection.

Problem: Mildew

You have probably noticed mildew on your shower curtain liner at one time or another. Mildew develops quickly in humidity. When mildew gets on your towels, bacteria will grow. Your towels will also begin to smell.

Solution: Air needs to circulate to prevent humidity. Turn on the fan and open the windows when showering. Don’t turn the fan off until the bathroom is dry.

Problem: Odour

Even when towels look clean, they may not smell that way. Sometimes even towels fresh from the washer and dryer have an odour once they become damp. Often it is because the washing machine has soil and bacteria build-up that adheres to the towel while it is being cleaned. Front washers tend to become dirty even more often than top loaders because they use less water. Towels are particularly susceptible to odours because the fibre materials are made to be absorbent.

Solution: Clean your washing machine thoroughly at least once a week. When you wash your towels, add 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to the machine instead of detergent. Also make sure towels are completely dry before putting them away.

Problem: Stains

It can be very frustrating to wash and dry a load of towels only to discover that they have stains. Bleach stains can come from acne medications left behind on your towels. If the fibres are bleached there is nothing you can do to restore the colour. If you use topical acne medications it is best to use white towels only. When your towels are stained brown or orange, make-up is usually the culprit.

Solution: The stains will permanently set in during the drying cycle, so it is important to get them out during the wash cycle. Pre-treat them and wash in hot water. Don’t put the towels in the dryer until the stains are gone.

Clean towels can carry odours. It is also possible to wash your towels and still be left with permanent stains that look terrible. But by keeping humidity levels down, cleaning your washing machine regularly, and pre-treating stains, you can ensure that you have fresh-smelling bright-looking towels every time.
